How to Be a Good Model

Not just anybody can be a model. If it were easy, we would all be gracing runways and doing photo shoots. There are many factors that make up a good model and by following the steps below, you’ll be able to see if you have what it takes to be successful.

Step1
There are certain traits and skills that one must possess in order to be a good model. In this sense good simply means a model that is ideal to work with and who is successful at what they do. There are plenty of bad models out there that don’t quite fit the mold or maintain bad habits that can hurt their career. Avoid being this type of Casting call at all costs.

Step2
While not all models have to be drop-dead gorgeous, being attractive and physically appealing is a must (with the exception of real models and other sub-categories of modeling). Clear, good skin is important as well as symmetrical features, a nice smile, great teeth and a proportional body.

Step3
A good model is height and weight appropriate and in good shape. You don’t necessarily have to be a health nut or work out 2-3 times a day but being able to maintain a healthy and steady weight as well as a fit body is essential.

Step4
A Good models are naturally photogenic in front of the camera. It is hard to teach someone how to be photogenic so if it doesn’t come easily to you, you may have a tough time. A great deal of a model’s career is spent in front of the camera and it is important that the end results are visually appealing.

Step5
Being professional is a must. A good open casting call is excellent at maintaining communication whether with their agent, client or other industry player arrives on time for assignments, attends all go-sees and castings they are sent to, and is able to follow directions.

Step6
A good model should be able to improvise and think on his/her feet. As the saying goes, anything that can happen, will and this also applies to a model’s job where they must work with that they have during a shoot. Being able to come up with poses each time the camera snaps a photo is also a skill that not many people possess. Good models know how to use their bodies to create flawless poses.

Step7
Good models don’t let their egos get to them. Practicing humility is a wonderful asset for any model. There are enough divas out there and the industry definitely does not need more. A good model is polite, courteous and appreciative of the people he/she works with. The photographer and crew work with models not for models.

Step8
A good model is easy to work with and doesn’t need a lot of direction. These types of models are able to do as instructed and are not fussy or difficult to be around. They are aware of what they need to do and execute the results in a timely manner.

Step9
Having excellent people skills is another great must for a good model. The modeling world has a lot of people in it and models often have to work with folks they have never met before. Be personable, make small talk and learn how to get along with people from all walks of life. If you are shy or insecure in any way, modeling will not be your cup of tea.

Step10
Good models possess some form of the it factor and this doesn’t just apply to runway models. All models should have something memorable about them, catches people’s eyes, and/or makes people do a double take.
